Beach Casual
The most relaxed dress code there is, but still a dress code. What beach casual means, what it permits, and the line between relaxed and unprepared.
What it means
Beach casual is the most relaxed point on the formality spectrum, the dress code for seaside settings, outdoor summer events, beachside parties, and warm-weather occasions where the environment itself is informal and the clothing should match it. It permits swimwear-adjacent clothing, sandals, shorts, sundresses, and fabrics chosen primarily for comfort in heat. What it does not mean is complete indifference: even beach casual assumes clean clothes in reasonable condition, appropriate to the context. If you’re at a beach party with other people, the social dimension applies, this is still a dress code, just a very relaxed one.
When you’ll see it
Beach casual is the standard for:
- Beach parties and seaside celebrations
- Outdoor summer events in warm climates
- Barbecues and picnics in casual settings
- Beachside lunch or casual outdoor dining (distinct from a resort restaurant with a dress code)
- Daytime pool or beach activities with a social element
- Destination events with a specifically relaxed, outdoor atmosphere
The dress code appears on invitations when hosts want to communicate that formal or even smart-casual clothing would be uncomfortable and out of place, but that some consideration for the event is still expected.
What to wear
Men
- Shorts: board shorts, casual cotton shorts, or tailored shorts depending on the level of the occasion. Well-fitting and in good condition.
- T-shirts or casual shirts: a linen shirt open over a t-shirt, a casual camp shirt, a well-fitted tee. The fabric should be lightweight and appropriate for the heat.
- Swimwear: at actual beach occasions, swimwear with a cover-up or linen shirt is entirely appropriate.
- Footwear: sandals, flip-flops, espadrilles, or bare feet at the beach itself. The footwear is the most contextual choice, what works at a beach bonfire is different from what works at a beachside wedding welcome dinner.
- Sun protection: hats, sunglasses, and light layers are part of the beach casual wardrobe in a way they aren’t for other dress codes.
Women
- Swimwear with cover-ups: the most versatile beach casual outfit. A swimsuit under a sundress or linen shirt that can be added or removed as the occasion shifts.
- Sundress: a lightweight sundress in cotton, linen, or a relaxed weave. The most straightforward beach casual choice for any occasion that isn’t full beach/pool.
- Shorts and top: denim cutoffs, casual shorts, or a casual skirt with a relaxed top.
- Footwear: sandals, flip-flops, espadrilles, or bare feet depending on the specific context. Wedge sandals or block-heeled sandals if the occasion has any social weight.
- Bags: a tote, beach bag, or relaxed crossbody. Function and practicality come first here.
What not to wear
The unusual challenge of beach casual is that it is possible to be overdressed as much as underdressed. A formal cocktail dress at a beach bonfire is as out of place as activewear at a formal garden party. The key mismatch to avoid is bringing clothing that reads as uncomfortable in the setting, stiff fabrics, formal footwear, or structured outfits that look wrong in a sandy, sunny, relaxed environment.
At the other extreme: clothing in visibly poor condition, swimwear at events where even beach casual implies some covering, or an overall look that reads as no preparation whatsoever.
The context within the context
Beach casual varies more by the specific occasion than any other dress code. A casual beach bonfire among close friends has no real requirements. A beachside rehearsal dinner in the Maldives might still require something more than board shorts, even with a “beach casual” dress code. When an invitation specifies beach casual, consider the formality of the host, the specific event, and the overall occasion, and dress for the most social version of it.
